A few words about the island of Andros
Andros today has great tourist development due to its many beautiful beaches, its paths, its natural wealth, the rich aquifer and many attractions. Also, being only 2 hours away from Athens, they make it a good destination for weekend vacations. The most touristic city is Chora and Batsi. They follow Gavrio, Ormos Korthiou, Apoikia and Kypri.
It is worth visiting the Afani Nafti square. In the area where the Empirikos mansions used to be built before the Germans bombarded them in September 1943, today is the square with the statue of the same name. Andros features many ancient monasteries. It is worth visiting the monastery of Agia Marina on the other side of village Apoikia, with the miraculous icon of the saint Agia Marina. The monastery of Agios Nikolaos, where is kept the miraculous icon of the Virgin of Blacherna. The Panaghia Panahrantou monastery which was built by Nikiforos Fokas in 963-969 AD, where is kept the skulls and bones of Agios Panteleimonas and Zoodochos Pigis monastery (or Agia as the locals call it), which is the largest monastery of Andros.
