Agadaki Tower in Andros

The mansion and the botanical garden

Agadaki Tower in Andros is an impressive building located specifically in Apatouria and is of 18th-century construction. According to the rumors, its construction may have replaced an older building located in the same spot. Agadaki Tower was the residence of the old Andriotic family of Tzortzis or Agadakis. Around the mansion is a wonderful orchard of about 8 acres in which you will find a traditional olive press, which is an excellent example of pre-industrial oil production.

On its initiative, the Kairios Library restored the Agadakis Tower and the traditional olive press, as they had been left to their fate and had been reduced to ruins by the passage of time. The orchard around the traditional mansion is cultivated according to the standards of organic farming and a significant effort is being made to preserve it. Finally, the upper floor of the tower has been converted into a seminar and conference venue.

Agadaki Tower in Andros – History

Agadaki Tower in Andros was the stately home of the well-known, homonymous Andriotic family Agadakis or Tzortzis. After the death of Loizos M. Vrontisis in 1973, the property was transferred to the State, as there were no heirs to claim it. Until its concession, the tower was leased to various people, which led to its eventual destruction. In 1991, the remaining ruins were declared a listed building. At that time, the Kairios Library proceeded with its general renovation and Agadaki Tower experienced its heyday again.

The olive press that surrounds the impressive mansion is perhaps the most characteristic and important example of a pre-industrial complex and after its renovation, it was restored to its original form. The olive press and the basement of the building still function as exhibition spaces for the tools and objects used, thus promoting the agricultural and farming culture of Andros. The surrounding acres of the tower has been transformed into a beautiful botanical garden of great cultural importance.

Agadaki Tower in Andros is a monument of the island’s agricultural history that is definitely worth a visit.
